Your Committee on Finance, to which was referred Resolution No. 734-20, reports as follows:
Resolution No. 734-20, transmitted by Finance Director Deanna Sako, via Communication No. 1082
dated September 18, 2020, authorizes the Office of the Mayor to enter into an agreement with the
University of Hawai`i.
This resolution provides $21,850.16 from the Department of Research and Development to the University
of Hawai`i to fund its Extension Services to Manage Little Fire Ants on Hawai`i Island project. Funds
would be used to distribute outreach materials, provide staff support, and for supplies and travel.
A motion to move Resolution No. 734-20 to Council with a positive recommendation was made by
Council Member Herbert M. "Tim" Richards, III, and seconded by Council Member Rebecca Villegas.
Department of Research and Development Economic Development Specialist Glenn Sako addressed
Your Committee noting that the agreement with the University of Hawai`i is to establish other media to
combat the Little Fire Ant for Hawai`i Island, including video, newspaper and other outreach efforts with
a specific plan to focus on industry groups going forward.
Your Committee on Finance is in accord with the purpose and intent of Resolution No. 734-20, and
recommends its adoption.
