Your Committee on Finance, to which was referred Resolution No. 735-20, reports as follows:
Resolution No. 735-20, transmitted by Finance Director Deanna Sako, via Communication No. 1083
dated September 18, 2020, authorizes the Office of the Mayor to enter into an agreement with the
University of Hawai`i.
This resolution provides $13,076 from the Department of Research and Development to the University of
Hawai`i to fund its Increasing Production of Novel Floriculture Products for Import Replacement project.
Funds would be used to purchase plant and propagation materials, and for costs associated with
cultivation and data collection.
A motion to move Resolution No. 735-20 to Council with a positive recommendation was made by
Council Member Rebecca Villegas, and seconded by Council Member Herbert M. "Tim" Richards, III.
Research and Development Economic Development Specialist Glenn Sako addressed Your Committee,
noting that the agreement with the University of Hawai`i is to establish other floriculture production
opportunities for commercialization and further branding of Hawai`i Island's agricultural industry. Some
thoughts were the peony flower or other lower elevation production hybrids, and eucalyptus among
others, with a focus on expanding our agricultural industry going forward.
Your Committee on Finance is in accord with the purpose and intent of Resolution No. 735-20, and
recommends its adoption.
