Your Committee on Finance, to which was referred Resolution No. 766-20, reports as follows:
Resolution No. 766-20, transmitted by Finance Director Deanna Sako, via Communication No. 1135
dated October 19, 2020, authorizes the Office of the Mayor to enter into an agreement with the
University of Hawai`i.
Resolution No. 766-20 provides that funds in the amount of$20,207 would be provided to the
University of Hawai`i for its Examining Korean Natural Farming in Anthuriums: A Systems
Approach project. Funds would be used toward labor for data collection, analyses, travel to
experiment sites, purchase of supplies, and publication costs.
A motion to move Resolution No. 766-20 to Council with a positive recommendation was
made by Council Member Herbert M. "Tim" Richards, III, and seconded by Council Member
Matt Kaneali`i-Kleinfelder.
Council Chair Aaron S. Y. Chung shared that the County of Hawai`i is a sister-city with Gokseong,
South Korea, where the Korean Natural Farming process was created. In past years, Gokseong hosted
a delegate from Hawai`i County, former Council Member Dennis "Fresh" Onishi, with North Korea
showcased their impressive and successful natural farming process.
Your Committee on Finance is in accord with the purpose and intent of Resolution No. 766-20, and
recommends its adoption.
