To the Editors,
The Hilo Outdoor Circle is an organization consisting of volunteers dedicated to
keeping the Island of Hawaii clean, green and beautiful. A major emphasis of our
organization is to save trees whenever possible.
Our current concern is [he situation in Liliuokalani Park, where there is a plan by
the County to cut approximately 85 trees, of which 30 formosan koa have already
been removed.
Councilman Dominic Yagong facilitated a meeting with Mayor Yamashiro on
September 7th, at which time we requested a moratorium of the cutting of the
remaining 55 trees in the park, and for a public hearing. Our request was denied.
Instead the Mayor has given us until Monday, September 13th, to submit our proposal
for which trees should be removed and which trees should be saved.
The position of [he Hilo Outdoor Circle is to adhere to the principles of our
organization: to save trees whenever possible. Therefore, we will not specify which
trees should be removed. Rather, we strongly urge the County to retain as many
trees as possible.
We wish to express our appreciation to all of those who have listened to our concerns,
including Mayor Yamashiro, Julie Tulang, Councilman Yagong and to the many
members of the public who have shared their concerns with us regarding this
valuable asset in our community.
