Mr. Curtis Tyler, Chairman
Committee on Human Services and Economic Development
County Building
Hilo, HI 964720
Dear Mr. Tyler,
On behalf of the Hilo Outdoor Circle, I am expressing our opposition to
Mayor Steven Yamashiro's plan to relocate the East Hawaii Cultural Center
to the old J C Penney building.
For twenty years, the East Hawaii Cultural Center has succeeded in
providing our community with a plethora of cultural activities, in a unique,
historical setting. In these buildings can be found excellent theater, art
shows and dance programs, all enhanced by the historical ambience.
Shakespeare in the Park is successfully presented every year, using the
exterior of the building and Kalakaua Park as a backdrop - the J C Penney
building pales in comparison.
Hilo should be enthusiastic to show residents and visitors alike a cultural
center in a historical building, of which we can be proud in the twenty-
first century.
The Hilo Outdoor Circle deplores any action to move the East Hawaii
Cultural Center from its current location and encourages the County Council
to support its existing location.
Yours respectfully,
Susan 'cks,
President, the Hilo Outdoor Circle i~
