Deaz Council Member,
My name is Henry Bianchini. I am a sculptor living in East Hawaii for the past thirty
years. I have public sculptwe on all Islands, including the statue of King Kalakaua in Kalakaua
Park in Hilo. My most recent sculptwe/installation was placed at Ha'aheo School in Hilo on
June 15, 1999. This sculptwe, "ENLIGHTENING THE SPIRIT", was implemented by a State
Foundation on Cultwe and the Arts and a Department of Education program called Art in Public
Places -Artist in Residence.
i taught all students at Ha'aheo School from January through June of 1999 and had them
visit my studio throughout the process of creating the piece.
I have taught sculpture technique at other schools and programs over the yeazs. Please
check my reswne.
Throughout most of my cazeer as an artist in Hawau, I have been affiliated with Francis
Sherrard and the East Hawaii Cultwal Center in one capacity or another. My children have been
in plays, my wife has costumed productions and shown her own work there. I have had numerous
shows there.
I was very pleased to see most of the Council in support of the East Hawaii Cultwal
Center at the meeting on September 2~g(I had a renewed faith in ow County Council.
I think we should realize how difficult it is to establish a Cultwal Center in a town like
Hilo with it's limited population and economic difficulties. Yet, there aze cleaz indications that
something is happening. I feel that we are on the ground floor of a Cultwal Renaissance
here. There aze hundreds of fine artists establishing themselves in East Hawau and most of them
aze affiliated with the East Hawaii Cultwal Center at any given time.
I would like to suggest that you give the East Hawaii Cultural Center free rent for ten (10)
yeazs and then start implementing a progressive payment plan proportionate to the going rate in
downtown Hilo.
I truly feel that yow understanding and affiliation with this Center will make us all proud
as we see our community experience a contemporary Cultwal immersion into the next century.
Sincerely with Aloha,
~>:.J`
