1 am a Kona and resident that is concerned with the mayor elects appointment of Zendo Kern to head
Hawaii County's Planning Department.
Mr. Kern does not appear to possess the education and experience that is required for this appointment. Most recently he
represents a land developer that is currently in the process of approval or rejection by the current administration. Mr. Kern currently
represents and consults with KV3 LLC. Under his consulting their development was rejected in his first attempt(2019) at
approval for the development. It is likely that a second rejection (2020) is happening now. Over the last two years he has
represented clients (KV3 LLC)that our currently using land zoned as Multi Family for agriculture purposes (cattle), which is illegal.
How can we call upon Mr. Kern to lead our planning department when his work as a consultant is insufficient, inadequate, and
unethical to our County standards. I find it extremely concerning that a potential head of planning is, at this moment,
privately representing multiple development companies in Hawaii County.
I would like to ask you these questions and to please explain them?
1. Does Mr Kern have the necessary qualifications and education to head the Planning Department?
2. How can Mr Kern possibly represent the people of the county of Hawaii, while being monetarily tied to private interests?
