Subject: Appointment of Zendo Kern as Planning Director
Chair Kierkiewicz, Vice Chair Villegas, and the Honorable County of Hawaii Council,
We are writing in support of Zendo Kern as the Hawaii County Planning Director. In our capacity as the
owners of a professional civil engineering firm, we have worked with Mr. Kern many times over the
years. In our experience, we have found him to be professional, responsible, reasonable, forthcoming, and
a pleasure to work with.
It appears that most of the objections surrounding Mr. Kern's appointment to Planning Director smack of
NIMBY-ism. And, given the fact that our new mayor, Mitch Roth, is the former County prosecutor, it seems
highly unlikely that he would chose anyone who had even the slightest taint of impropriety for such an
important position.
Mr. Kern is qualified for the position, and we believe he would be a valuable asset to the County.
