Subject: Ikaika Rodenhurst Department of Public Works Deputy Director Written Testimony
Aloha Council Members,
Ikaika Rodenhurst has outstanding qualities that make him an excellent candidate for Director of Department of Public Works
at the County of Hawaii. Ikaika is a team player and is driven to accomplish the goal that needs to be achieved. His
positive energy helps facilitate effective communication between the State,Contractor, and the public. Ikaika is a dedicated,
ethical, and hardworking individual.
I had the privilege of working with Ikaika for six and a half years as a Consultant Project Engineer in the Construction Section at
the State of Hawai'i, Hawai'i District Department of Transportation.
Ikaika possesses a positive and calm demeanor. There are many challenges that one faces while working as a Project Engineer
in the Construction Section.The projects do not always go smoothly and the interest of the State is not always in the same
interest of the contractor or the public. Despite these obstacles, Ikaika was always able to complete the projects with the least
amount of interruptions and always took the opinion and feedback into consideration from all involved parties. He
always offered his assistance to support his colleagues to ensure that they received the best end result. In addition, he
helped close out projects that he was not even involved with that required researching of files.
Ikaika is highly respected by his colleagues. His enthusiastic, optimistic attitude is contagious and serves to motivate and
energize those around him. He is a natural leader who has a gift of identifying an individual's primary talents and strengths and
is able to bring out the best in his colleagues and subordinates. Ikaika is also very calm and collected while under pressure and
has excellent problem-solving skills as well as exceptional team-building skills. While working with Ikaika, I have learned that he
was very goal oriented and always displayed a positive attitude.This is why I believe the contractors and inspectors got along
well with him. He was able to negotiate changes on projects that benefitted both the State and the Contractor.
I strongly believe that Ikaika will be a true asset to the County of Hawai'i, Director of Public Works, not only because of
his technical knowledge and credentials as a Licensed Civil Engineer, but because of his positive and caring attitude. I
appreciate the opportunity that I was given to recommend him for this position.
