Aloha Hawaii County Council Members,
I wish to give testimony regarding the appointment of Steven f. Rodenhurst to the position of Director of Public Works.
Although I was concerned about his administrative experience, I did watch the confirmation hearing before the County Council on
January 5th, 2021 and was very impressed with his responses to Council Members. I, too, am a registered professional engineer in
the State of Hawaii, and have overseen a public works department when I served as mayor of our former home town of Gurnee,
Illinois. I believe I understand the type of person and qualifications necessary to run a very important and sometimes difficult
operation.
After watching Mr. Rodenhurst's articulate and thorough responses to some tough questioning, I was convinced that he will be an
asset to the department and the County of Hawaii. In particular, his focus on public safety and customer service stood out, and his
response to Council Member Chung regarding County liability was important as he stated that his professional ethics require him to
identify issues affecting public safety even though they were approved by outside professionals.
I do not know Mr. Rodenhurst personally, and have never met him. My support for him is based solely on his performance at the
confirmation hearing. He endured some difficult questioning and remained poised and polite. I encourage all the members who
voted against his confirmation to reconsider and, hopefully, pass this nomination unanimously at the full Council meeting. I believe
he will not disappoint.
