Aloha Council Chair David and Council Members:
It is my pleasure to nominate Deborah Ward of Council District 5 to the Public Access, Open
Space and Natural Resources Preservation Commission.
Ms. Ward, a long-time resident of Hawai'i County, is a well-practiced hiker, farmer, active Puna
community member, and the owner of Laiku Farms and Special Ti Nursery. Ms. Ward has over
20 years of dedicated service with UH Hilo, College of Tropical Agriculture and Human
Resources Extension Service, as well as a wealth of knowledge working with the Hawai'i
Organic Farmers Association.
Ms. Ward holds a master's degree in Horticultural from UH Manoa with postgraduate
coursework at UH Hilo. She is an active participant in several civic organizations, including the
Hawai'i Tropical Fruit Growers, HCC Forest TEAM Advisory Committee, UH Hilo Office of
Mauna Kea Management Environmental Committee, and the Sierra Club, the nation's largest
and most effective grassroots environmental movement, passionately defending our most
precious resources and wild places. If confirmed, she will serve a term to end December 31,
2025.
