Dear Councilpersons:
My wife and I have owned a home at Kukio since 2004. We firmly believe in supporting our community and its organizations,
helping to better the life and opportunity on the Big Island. Prior to the 23%tax jump last July we had consistently been
generous donors to a number of organization in grave need.
The unprecedented tax hike on second home owners seemed to represent either a lack of understanding or absence of caring
by the Council about Non-Residents' commitment and support of our Island and community; it has caused a deep chilling
impact on our philanthropy,and makes us question our welcome on the island. It violates any sense of aloha, and feels like a
discriminating,target assault on the every people who not only pay the lion's share of tax on this island, but support
generously the community through their philanthropy,the people they employ, and the independent capital investment they
make in local businesses.
If the Council passes Councilman Aaron Chung's proposal to donate the tax increase to acceptable 501(c)(3) organizations, we
think it will encourage more philanthropy and have a major impact on community development. Please vote yes On Bill 18.
