Subject: Non-Resident 23% real estate tax increase considerations-- Feb 2 meeting
Dear Councilpersons:
My wife and I own a home at Mauna Kea. We firmly believe in supporting our community and its organizations, helping to
better life and opportunity on the Big Island. Prior to the 23%tax jump last July, we had given well into six figures of donations
over the previous 18 months. As the unprecedented tax hike seemed to represent either a lack of understanding or not caring
by the Council about Non-Residents' commitment and support of our Island and community, we suspended our donations and
recommended that others do the same. We have supported The Big Island Giving Tree Food Care program, North Memorial
Hospital, Keck Observatory,The Nature Conservancy, the Theater in Waimea, the Film Festival and others.
If the Council passes Councilman Aaron Chung's proposal to donate the tax increase to acceptable 501(c)(3) organizations,
we look forward to resuming our contributions which we would like to do. We all want a stronger community with
opportunity and growth for people on the Big Island, where we live several months of the year.
Respectfully,
Clark and Sharon Winslow
