Aloha e Chair Kimball and Hawai'i1 fliild Council Members, •
My name is Malia Kipapa and I am a resident of Hawai'i Island in North Kona and I am a
representative of our Kipapa `Ohana from the Ahupua'a of Pahoehoe, Kona. Please accept my
testimony on behalf of my ohana IN STRONG SUPPORT of Resolution 35-21, Urging the
County of Hawai`i to establish a•jobs corps program for Hawai`i Island to help address
unempoyment impacts of the COVID-19 Pandemic and to support economic diversification.
Our Kipapa Ohana has had a Friends of the Park(FOP)MOA with the County of Hawai'i since
2014 and since have worked collaboratively in supporting the curatorship of our families wahi
pana in Pahoehoe. In 2013 the County purchased the 16 acres of land with some of the funds
being used from the Public Open Space fund (PONC) therefore making our `ohana burials sites
and cultural sites a cultural park, named after our Kupuna Kane Kipapa. From this relationship
and in alignment with this resolution it will support carreer opportunities that can contribute this
this special place of Pahoehoe.
Through this continued relationship that our `ohana maintains with the Hawai`i County we hope
that this resolution will help assist with generating green jobs and opportunities for our `ohana
and community of Kona.
I appreciate the time and consideration and hope that as a legislative decision-making body that
you hear, review, see the community benefit and value, and accept resolution 35-21 to make
Hawai'i Island better again.
Mahalo,
Malia Kipapa
Ka `Ohana Kipapa
