Aloha Kakou,
The Makahanaloa Fishing Association supports Resolution 35-21 and urges Hawai'i County to
establish a jobs corps program for Hawai'i Island to help address the needs of our 'aina.
Makahanaloa Fishing Association represents over one hundred and twenty `ohana from Pepe`ekeo,
Papa'ikou, and Honomu. Our access to traditional fishing areas has been threatened since the
sugar plantations slow demise, ending in the 1990s. The Association is by every means seeking to
grow and to protect our fishing community's rights to provide food for their families and maintain
the generational bond with our treasured shoreline areas.
Our communities and young people need to establish and strengthen their bonds with our special
lands through aloha 'aina or we will lose them to the wrong types of development. This is already
happening. Ua mau ke ea o ka 'aina i ka pono. If our lands disappear, so will our righteousness.
