RE: Letter of Support for Resolution 35-21
Aloha e Councilmembers,
In 1909, Hawaii's beloved Mol Wahine, Queen Lili`uokalani created a special trust (Lili`uokalani
Trust) dedicated to the welfare of orphan and destitute children of Hawai`i. Over 110 years later,
we continue to be inspired by the Queen's foresight, vision, and values that serve as the foundation
of our work.
Resolution 35-21, Urging the County of Hawai'i to establish a job corps program for Hawai'i Island to
help address unemployment impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic and to support economic
diversification, is in alignment with the Trust's mission and vision for our kamali'i, `ohana,
communities in which they live.
The pandemic has caused many of our Hawai'i Island residents to lose their jobs, some greatly affected
causing rippling distress throughout the household and into the lives of their children. The Trust has a
vision to provide a multitude of programs and opportunities that transform and contribute to thriving
youth throughout Hawai'i.
Due to the effects of the pandemic, more than ever we look to our natural sources, water, soil, and air,to
get us to the sustainable future Hawai'i has the potential to hold. The combination of green jobs and
workforce development on Hawai'i Island is the jumpstart we need to bring that future to fruition for our
communities, `ohana, and keiki.
We urge your support for Resolution 35-21. Mahalo piha for your consideration and the opportunity
to submit this letter of support.
Me ka aloha pumehana,
Mana Purdy
