Mahalo for paying attention carefully to the concerns that many have regarding the confirmation of Zendo Kern. He does not meet the basic qualifications of the position for which he has been nominated. As a college/University professor for nearly 40 years, I am particularly aware of how important it is for a person to have an educated mind. As a professor at all levels of post-secondary education, I am very alert to the growth in thinking and understanding that comes with a degree. To be educated means to be exposed to challenging ideas, creatively finding links and solutions, thinking holistically about a subject, and perhaps most importantly seeing the views and values of others clearly. Some of this is learned in middle school, but most is developed during high school and college, something Kern has not been exposed to. The qualities that have been praised in him are perhaps worthwhile, but they do not substitute for an agile mind that reasons well. I urge you to continue to reject him for the position because he lacks basic requirements as outlined in the Charter. This is no time to be ignoring the wisdom of that charter, in effect"dumbing-down"the administration of the island. Mahalo for your thoughtful consideration. Dr. Kate Kealani H.
