Subject: Zendo Kern Appointment
Honorable Council Members:
There has been a ground swell of concern as to the appointment by the Mayor of Zendo
Kern as Director of Planning. This concern has been expressed in various ways by
members of the Community, and also members of the Planning Committee.
The Mayor has an important and complex responsibility to those who live on the Big Island.
The people reporting to him should not only be capable, but also they should meet the
standards and requirements prescribed by Hawaii County Charter Section 6.72. Further, it
is essential that they not have conflicting interests.
Failing any of the above places a significant burden on the Mayor in performing his duties
and responsibilities and, indeed, could subject him to future legal action.
I urge you to not support the Mayor's appointment of Zendo Kern to be Director of Planning.
