Aloha Council Members,
Watched the last Planning Committee meeting about confirmation of Zendo Kern and was appalled.
Something seems really off, the aggressive ways of trying to sabotage Zendo Kern's nomination is
alarming. What is really going on? Zendo Kern is obviously qualified for the position, as supported by the
review by HR director and attorneys of the county charter requirements. It would be so valuable to have a
person with his experience on the job. Yet Rebecca Villegas has her own interpretation of things? And Matt
Kleinfelder was determined to stop any meaningful conversation or information during the meeting.
Obviously their minds were made up before the meeting and they also managed to confuse the 2 newbie
council members of their mission. What is really going on behind the scenes? It reeks of corruption and
special interest trying to sabotage Zendo Kern's nomination. The county council is failing the people of this
island and not giving Mitch Roth or Zendo Kern fair or professional treatment.
If you listened to your constituents, you will hear over and over again that a change in the Planning
Department is desperately needed. Yet your actions ensure that only insider career bureaucrats can be
hired. How will change ever happen? Does Mitch Roth get to decide about his team? To watch council
members with no background in the trade, county zoning or planning issues stand up to sabotage this
nomination is outrageous. At the same time you saw very experienced testifiers as well as senior
employees at the Planning Department supporting Zendo Kern. Why are you not listening? You are failing
the people of this island.
