Subject: Confirmation of Zendo Kern County of Hawaii Planning Director
Aloha County Council Members,thank you for this opportunity to submit testimony in favor of confirmation of Mr. Zendo Kern
as the County of Hawaii Planning Director. I was hoping to be able to testify by video, however, my schedule does not allow
me to do so.
I ask that you please confirm Mr. Zendo Kern as the County of Hawaii Planning Director. I have known and worked with Mr.
Kern for many years. Mr. Kern has proven himself to be fair, resourceful and a fast learner. I believe he is the right person for
this challenging position, and can do a lot of good for our island and our community. Mr. Kern has a lot of experience working
with the Planning Department,giving him an excellent knowledge base on the rules and laws that govern the planning process
in our county. This also has given him invaluable experience on how to work with the commissions regulating planning on our
island.
Being from Puna, has provided Mr. Kern with the understanding of our unique island and the challenges we face on providing
sustainable opportunities for our community and its people. It is an important balance he takes seriously and is well suited for.
Our community elected the Mayor by a large margin, acknowledging agreement with his platform. Mr. Kern was well vetted
by the Mayors office to participate in the Mayors cabinet to help him implement this platform. Please allow the Mayor his
discretion in selecting the people he feels will help him meet these goals.
Mr. Kern meets the eligibility for this position based on the expert opinion of the County of Hawaii Human Resources
Department and Corporation Council.
If there are any concerns,there are many checks and balances in our system, please give him the opportunity to show us the
good he can do for our community.
Please confirm Mr. Kern as our new Planning Director.
