The Hawaii County Charter, Section 6.7.2 states:
Section 6-7.2. Planning Director.
The planning director shall have had a minimum of five years of training and experience in a
responsible planning position, or a degree in planning, engineering architecture, geography, or
another planning-related field and three years of experience in a responsible planning position.
First: Mr Kern's CV has none of the above. There has been no public statement from Mayor-Elect or
WHT that Mr Kern has any training and experience in any recognized governmental planning
position. Kern only seems to claim consulting experience in his own company.
Second: he has no degree in any of the fields listed, in fact it seems he doesn't even have a high school
diploma.
Third: Kern doesn't seem to have 3 yrs experience in an administrative capacity with any government
agency. Kern claims consulting experience in his own company. So it seems Kern doesn't have any of
the mandatory expertise that is needed for a Planning Director.
A number of his campaign donations have come from mainland developers. He has a long list (did he
ever supply the list) of conflict of interest clients from the past and he would have to recluse
himself from many clients and Kern's staff would be under pressure to be favorable to Kern's
acquaintances.
Council members please say no to Mr Kern.
