We write this letter on behalf of the East Hawai'i Cultural Center(EHCC)
Youth Arts Series (YAS) in support of Resolution No. 58-21 to declare
Alar Ycn,nq March as Youth Art Month in the County of Hawaii. This declaration will
help to further expand the efforts within the community to encourage

but also for developing their abilities in problem-solving, innovation,

communication, collaboration, and community building. These skills are
critical for our future leaders and citizens to face the challenges of our
rapidly changing world.

The EHCC x Kal5kaua Park art activation project is to be held throughout
the month of March 2021. In addition to the Young At Art exhibit, EHCC

will lead a collective art installation in Kal5kaua Park, in conjunction with

There will be several ways to participate to ensure that any keiki in the
Hilo area wanting to contribute will be able to have their flag(s) included.
Faor.J'vt!D;iu The month's activities are designed not only to unite the community but
also to highlight our ongoing youth program, the Youth Arts Series, and
encourage people to visit the EHCC gallery and gain some inspiration
from all of the Young,At Art keiki artists.

On Saturdays, March 6-20, free flag decorating events will be held from
10am-2pm at the EHCC Lanai with support from Keiki Heroes to facilitate
safe gathering practices. Included will be opportunities for tie dyeing,
printmaking, and yarn embroidery.
From March 15-18, the Youth Arts Series will offer educational classes to
delve deeper into the artistic techniques of Native Hawaiian Plant Dyes,
Fabric Collage, Multicolor Dyes (Tie Dye and Shibori), and Fabric
Painting and DIY Stencils.
During regular EHCC gallery hours in March (Tuesday-Friday, 10am-4pm
and Saturdays 10am-2pm), keiki will also have the opportunity to create
Doodle Flags or to take home supplies for creating flags at home.
During the final weekend of March, the flags will be gathered,
assembled, and installed at Kalakaua Park. This visual representation of
our keiki community - diverse, unique, creative, and beautiful -will be
available throughout April for inspiration and appreciation.
As the EHCC YAS team, we are deeply committed to creating
opportunities for all keiki to appreciate, explore, and express themselves
through the arts. We strongly believe that this resolution to declare
March as Youth Art Month will help bring to light the importance of the
arts as an essential part of the success and well-being of our entire
community.
