Puako reef is suffering contamination and coral is being comprised everyday with chloroform from cesspools along
the coast. We must act now to stop the destruction of this beautiful coast line. Many families come here to enjoy the
ocean and beaches. Let's stop the contimanates going into the ocean. Waste water system is needed and should be a
priority for the county and state of Hawaii.

Puako is a unique residential neighborhood on the Kohala coast of the Big Island. Just three miles long and a one
way in and one way out drive. It is a world class destination for divers and tourists. The reef has suffered damage and
coral beds have diminished over the years due to the constant tidal processes that enter the existing cess pools of '
many residences along Puako Beach Drive.
This tidal action constantly takes black water from the cesspools and contimanates the reef where children and
families come to swim and enjoy the beauty Puako has to offer.
This has to stop. The high bacteria that is present can cause illness, infections, and lasting adverse health affects.
Phis waste water project has been on the docket for years and never seems to get the attention it needs. Nearly two
million dollars of private funds have been donated and uncounted hours of public service has gone into this project.
Still we continue to contaminate the reef. Studies from UH Hilo have concluded the water has constant hi(yh
chloroform levels and often beaches are posted as a health hazard.
Puako property tax dollars is around four million dollars a year. So why are we not able to get a proper sewer system
for this unique and threatened section of Kohala Coast?
Extensive studies, meetings, charts, designs, and discussions have all been done. Coral Reef Foundation has spent
years researching this problem. All parties involved agree the coral reef needs our protection so we can pass on to
future generations the beauty of our beloved Puako.
