To: County Council, County of Hawai'i
Per: County Council meeting of March 3, 2021, 9:00 am
Regarding:
Funding Bill 25; The allocation of county matching funds for Clean Water for Reefs Puako
Hawaii project.
Position: Strong Support
Me ke Aloha, Chair Maile David, Vice-Chair Aaron Chung, and Members of the County
Council
It is generally scientifically recognized coral reefs around the planet are in crisis. Hawai'i and
Hawai'i county also have impacted reefs. The beach community along Puako Road has
rapidly developed. The vast majority of hundreds of residences are on cesspool. These
cesspools leach effluent deleterious to marine life and reef health. A solution is urgently
needed.
May 2, 2019, HB 1259 SD1 passed the State Budget. The $1.5 million dollars in State
funding has been allocated for the planning and design of a Puako sewer system. The
funding comes with a requirement for the County to provide matching funds equaling 20% of
the state funds appropriated for the project.
Please provide Hawaii County matching funds for the Clean Water for Reefs Puako Hawaii
project.
