Subject: Written testimony for Bill 25 of the County Council
Good Morning Council,
My name is Diane O'Toole and my husband Michael and I have been residents of Puako and Wailea since 1995. My family and I fully
support a community wide wastewater treatment facility.
Over a decade ago, our community realized that our lack of a wastewater treatment system has been contributing to high nutrients
in our ocean. We have been working with UH Hilo, Cornell University and the Seattle Aquarium to conduct research off the shores of
Puako since then.Their findings were presented to our community on many occasions. It is important to all of us to care for our j
ocean; not just for the residents of Puako but for all who come to enjoy our ocean:the fishermen,the families from other
communities,the surfers, divers and the tourists.
Puako (and the two beach parks, Hapuna and Wailea)is the only community on the south Kohala Coast that does not have a sewer
treatment facility.The South Kohala Coast is a very popular tourist destination. We in Puako don't think the treatment facility will
only benefit us. We feel it will benefit all who use our ocean.
Our children, Rachel (22) and Nathan (17)were born and raised in Puako. We spent countless hours enjoying our beach.They learned
to swim in the ocean in Puako.We want to make the ocean cleaner so my future grandchildren can enjoy our beautiful ocean and
reef!
Please approve the funds to start the process.
