The reef cannot sustain the continued assault of untreated and minimally treated waste. This reef is a treasure that Hawaii can take great pride in protecting. Many residents and visitors alike spend a great deal of time in these waters. It is critical for the health and safety of the reef itself, its inhabitants and its human neighbors that toxic wastewater be diverted from the shallow coastline through a proper wastewater treatment facility. We all share the desire to respect the island and the reef. I can think of no better way for our government to demonstrate this respect than by moving forward with this critical project.
