REPORT OF THE <br /> COMMITTEE ON PLANNING <br /> DATE: March 17, 2021 Re: Comm. No. 163 <br /> PLACE: Council Chambers <br /> Kailua-Kona, Hawaii <br /> TIME: 9:00 a.m. <br /> Council Chair and Members <br /> Hawaii County Council <br /> Hilo, Hawaii 96720 <br /> Your Committee on Planning, to which was referred Communication No. 163, reports as <br /> follows: <br /> Communication No. 163, from Mayor Mitch Roth dated February 26, 2021, reappoints <br /> Nicole Lui to the Hawaii County Cultural Resources Commission. If confirmed, Ms. Lui <br /> will serve a five-year term to end on December 31, 2025. <br /> Pomaika`i Bartolome was present in the Hilo Council Chambers to announce Ms. Lui. Ms. Lui <br /> is kama`aina of Hawaii Island, has been involved in various community organizations such as <br /> Queen Lili`uokalani Trust and Office of Hawaiian Affairs, and has extensive experience and <br /> knowledge on ethno-historical, archeological, and genealogical topics, as well as Native <br /> Hawaiian burial protocols. <br /> Ms. Lui expressed her gratitude for being on this Commission, and that she appreciates the <br /> ability to ensure cultural and historical background accuracy in cultural and archaeological <br /> reports, which is important because the reports are often cited in research and University studies. <br /> Committee Members Sue Lee Loy, Rebecca Villegas, and Holeka Inaba all thanked Ms. Lui for <br /> her willingness to serve the island in this capacity and expounded on her skill, experience and <br /> knowledge. Committee Chair Ashley Kierkiewicz also thanked Ms. Lui for continuing her <br /> service on this Commission, and noted that it is important to have her knowledge and experience <br /> of cultural context to make responsible land use decisions. <br /> Pursuant to Hawaii County Code Section 2-226(b), there shall be a Hawaii County Cultural <br /> Resources Commission which shall be appointed by the Mayor with the approval of the Council. <br /> The vote was then taken on the motion to move this measure to Council with a favorable <br /> recommendation and passed with eight"ayes," and Council Chair Maile David absent and <br /> excused. <br /> PC Report No: 14 <br />
