Aloha Hawaii Island County Council,
I am submitting written testimony in support of"Resolution 59-21 communication 135"; to allocate and distribute
funds to Hawaii Rise Foundation a 501(c)3 to act as the fiscal sponsor for the 2021 Makahiki Community Celebration
in Hilo, 141.
VVhy do we celebrate Makahiki? Why do we involve the community?
The importance of celebrating a community's culture is for the knowledge; knowledge is the key to tolerance and
understanding. Celebrating a community's culture will gain new perspectives of lives around each other as well as
communities outside. It helps to broaden our own perspectives and to fully experience and educate ourselves_ In a
word, heritage. Celebrating a community's heritage is energizing and thought provoking. We live in such an isolated
part of the world that we turn to our community for support.
l'he annual Makahiki celebration brings our heritage to the for front to celebrate, educate and perpetuate culture to our
communities. Spreading tmowledge, experience, and community support to each other. Reminding our community
where we have come from and where we can go as a culture, as a community. Makahiki is not only for the Ilawaiian
community, but also for all cultures to gain knowledge and fully experience the Hawaiian heritage. It is a thought-
provoking event that will provide new and broaden perspectives.
It is valued definition of aloha.
