Please note for the record my favorable testimony for Resolution 61-21, for cameras for the historic Pahoa Village.
This is much needed for the economic revitalization of our community. With covid-19, and the 2018 lava flow before j
that, our historic village seems to be in a continual struggle. Not only have we had to contend with a pandemic and
natural disasters, we also seem to be in a continual struggle with the criminal element who seem emboldened to
engage in drug use in plain sight in the historic village. Those of us who are diligent about trying to combat these
activities through our voice and advocacy seem to be at a disadvantage, because, when people get arrested, they seem
to very quickly return to the village without any apparent consequence from our judicial system. Of course, the
larger problem with criminal justice here and throughout our nation is at play here. But we feel like cameras will help
police have a stronger case against some of our more chronic offenders who seem to repeat patterns without regard to
authority and to the justice system. Perhaps with a stronger case, e.g., surveillance evidence, our police and
prosecutors can be more convincing to our judges. j
As a merchant in Pahoa and as a parent, who has had to contend with all of this in the village for years, 1
wholeheartedly support any and all efforts to clean up the village and make it safe place to live, to work, and to
visit. Mahalo.
