No. 160 Your Committee on Public Works and Mass Transit, to which was referred Communication No. 160, reports as follows: Communication No. 160, transmitted by the Honorable Mayor Mitch Roth, dated February 17, 2021, nominates James "Kimo" Lee of Council District 2 to the Transportation Commission. Executive Assistant to the Mayor, P6maika`i Bartolome, introduced the nominee. Mr. Lee is a lifelong Hawaii Island resident, and for the past 15 years, has been responsible for the planning, management, and development of 17,000 acres of kama`aina family-owned lands as Director of Development for W.H. Shipman, Ltd. Mr. Lee holds a bachelor's degree in Business Administration from Chaminade University. He is an active member of numerous civic organizations, including the Japanese Chamber of Commerce and Industry in Hawaii, Hawaii Island Chamber of Commerce, and the State Historic Preservation — Hawai`i Island Burial Council. If confirmed, he would serve a term to end December 31, 2024. Committee Member Matt Kaneali`i-Kleinfelder asked why the applicant was interested in this commission. Mr. Lee responded by saying he was interested in the multi -modal transportation plan rather than regulatory compliance and the Mayor convinced him that his skills in planning and development would be a great asset and resource by providing a different perspective. Committee Member Tim Richards thanked Mr. Lee for serving the community and stated he was excited to see a shift in the Commission as he sees many needs to address sustainability. Committee Member Heather Kimball also thanked Mr. Lee and emphasized the importance of mass transit for sustaining the economic viability of our community. Committee Member Holeka Inaba asked Ms. Bartolome why his application was dated January 1, 2019, Ms. Bartolome explained the most current application may have been mistakenly overlooked. PWMTC Report No.: 5 PWMTC-5 Page 2 March 16, 2021 Your Committee is in accord with the purpose and intent of Communication No. 160, and recommends confirmation of the appointment of Mr. James "Kimo" Lee to the Transportation Commission.
