Your Committee on Finance, to which was referred Communication No. 155, reports as follows:
Communication 155,transmitted by the Honorable Mayor Mitch Roth dated February 17, 2021,
nominates Diane Kaneali`i of Council District 9 to the Public Access, Open Space, and Natural
Resources Preservation Commission.
Executive Assistant to the Mayor Pomaika`i Bartolome came forward to introduce the nominee. Born
and raised on the Big Island in Kohala, Ms. Kaneali`i is a former nurse practitioner with a Bachelor's
Degree from the University of Phoenix. Her community involvement is extensive and includes
achievements toward building the Resource Center on Hawaiian Homelands in Kawaihae. If confirmed,
she would serve a term to end on December 31, 2025.
Ms. Kaneali'i was not present for the meeting; however due to her experience and knowledge the
Council felt confident to forward the nomination to Council. Members spoke highly of Ms. Kaneali`i
and in favor of this appointment.
Chair Kaneali`i-Kleinfelder asked to recuse himself from the vote as the nominee is his Aunt.
Pursuant to Hawai`i County Code Section 2-215(a), there shall be a Public Access, Open Space, and
Natural Resources Preservation Commission,which shall be appointed by the Mayor and confirmed by
the Council.
Ms. Kaneali`i will be present at full Council for final confirmation.
Your Committee on Finance is in accord with the purpose and intent of Communication No. 155, and
recommends confirmation of the appointment of Ms. Diane Kaneali`i to the Public Access, Open Space,
and Natural Resources Preservation Commission.
