Your Committee on Finance, to which was referred Resolution No. 76-21, reports as follows:
Resolution No. 76-21, transmitted by Director of Finance Deanna Sako via Communication No. 179
dated March 17, 2021, authorizes the acceptance of a donation of a water polo lane line course to the
County of Hawaii Department of Parks and Recreation.
This donation, provided by the USA Women's Water Polo Team, is valued at approximately $5,500
and would be used at the Kona Community Aquatic Center in Kailua-Kona.
Pursuant to Hawai`i County Charter Section 13-12 the Council may accept gifts of donations of
money, securities or other personal property. In addition, Hawaii County Code Section 2-162(a)
states that any gifts or donations of money, securities, or personal property which fall within the
capitalization procedures of the Department of Finance may be accepted by a resolution approved by
the Council.
Council Member Ashley Kierkiewicz called forward Deputy Parks and Recreation Director Michelle
Hiraishi and Aquatics Division Specialist Alejandra Flores Morikami, who explained that the United
States Water Polo Team reached out to the department wishing to travel to the islands for a team
training excursion. The County did not have the equipment to support the event, so the team shipped
it to the department with the intent on leaving it here when the event is completed.
Council Member Matt Kaneali`i-Kleinfelder asked if there is any water polo equipment on the island.
Ms. Morikami replied that the department does not have a Water Polo program and this is the first of
this type of equipment to add to their inventory. She expressed that she would love to see youth
Water Polo Program in the future.
