Since the County has authored and approved these subdivisions and all building permits, it does seem now after two dangerous lava events that the insurance coverage be examined and a study be done to give residents relief. Personally I was able to obtain Allstate insurance many years ago for my home in Nanawale but when a large albezia tree fell on my roof from across the street in 2014,'damaging the roof, it took over TWO years to file and obtain enough coverage to replace the roof. The Honolulu appraiser did not believe the$10,000 cost of removing the old shingle roof that had to be transported to the Hilo dump. When I realized that Allstate only wanted to pay exactly the amount I had paid over the years, I had to appeal to upper management to fully pay the cost of a metal roof placed over the old shingles rather than remove them. Water was leaking into the house before the problem was finally resolved. Neither the County nor FEMA recognized our problems in 2018 during the second lava event when many of us had to "unofficially"evacuate due to extensive toxic gasses in the buffer zones. There was little or no insurance for having to leave home for four months and FEMA covered very little of actual damage for many residents. Because monitors were lost and not replaced for a very long time, proof of these difficulties were next to impossible. Toby S Hazel Hilo Sent from my iPhone Comm. N2j. 11 S .1 Ref.
