We are very concerned about the ongoing conflict between Mayor Roth and Commissioner Mark
Van.Pernis. We believe that Mayor Roth is an honorable individual and hope that he is
recommending the removal of Mark Van Pernis from office for appropriate reasons. Although
we do not know Mr. Van Pernis personally, it appears that removal from office is not appropriate
for the reasons that are indicated in the WHT article.
Kona Councilman Holeka Inaba,the WHT article and the comments of North , it seems that
Mr. Van Pernis possesses a wealth of information about historical issues of our County and is a
valued asset to the Leeward Planning Commission.
It is well known that Tourette Syndrome is a neurological condition characterized by tics
(involuntary movements and noises). It should be noted that, there are many excellent qualities
associated with TS such as having strong verbal skills, tenacity, creativity, empathy, and hyper-
focus. It should be noted that Dr. Samuel Johnson, a man of letters and the first person to
compile an English dictionary, and Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, arguably the most creative
musical composer of all time, were possibly afflicted with this condition.
We sincerely hope that this attempt to remove Mr. Van Pernis is not based on issues with his
disability. We are fortunate to live in a democracy,not a dictatorship, and voices of dissent are
an integral part of any democracy. We urge the Council Planning Committee to reject
Communication 183 to discharge Mr. Van Pernis.
