To the Hawaii County Council Planning Committee:
Concerning the letter by Mitch Roth asking for the removal of Mark Van Pernis.
I've been bothered by the actions of our new mayor ( for whom I voted) since I read his
comments regarding the lack of support for his unqualified and highly contentious choice for
Planning Director, Zendo Kern.
Then there was the "Halting" of the citizen boards by Kern, until "appropriate people" can be
found to fill the boards hey Zendo....what do you consider "appropriate"??? As a former
KVDC commissioner and then Chairwoman I can tell you there are LOTS of qualified
people ready and willing to serve on citizen boards...and I was insulted by the claims that
were made by Kern regarding the speed, efficiency and value of these boards.
I could go on about that but this letter is to voice my support for Mark Van Pernis.
He is a true public servantin an unpaid volunteer position... his years of experience as an
attorney shines through in his doggedness as well his ability to get to the bottom of an issue . If that
means "cross examining" to get to the truth...so be it.
Are we simply going to appoint people we agree with? Is this where our county is going?
We are at a crossroads in the future of West Hawaii...do we go the way of filling every vacant seat with
pro development rubber stampers or do we continue to ask the hard questions that sometimes need to be
asked.
I am also APPALLED at the manner in which this whole situation has been handled.
