Subject: Communication 183 Re: Commissioner Van Peris
Aloha Council Members
It is with great concern that I write this letter regarding the consideration of the possible ousting of Commissioner Van Peris. The
Mayor's statement,as written in West Hawaii News, refers to very vague and general statements why he wants to oust the
commissioner without any actual facts being given. Commissioner Van Penis' holding Planning Director Zendo Kern accountable to
his conflict of interest by"inadvertently" signing off on a preliminary plat map for a project where he previously served as consultant
is a clear statement showing how important Commissioner Van Peris is to keeping the County of Hawaii operating fairly and
honestly.
It is Planning Director Zendo Kern who should be removed. His signing off on this preliminary Plat map was no mistake and should
not be looked at as forgivable. The County of Hawaii needs more watch dogs like Commissioner Van Penis who know the law,
County history and will ask pointed questions to expose fraudulent ways when necessary. It isn't a popularity game here but
working in an honest and open manner for the Best of our County. Commissioner Van Penis should probably be listened to more
rather then less. There is probably good reason he has had his microphone turned off, but it may have been he was presenting
some important facts that needed to be considered but for some reason were not. Having history, knowledge and experience is so
important to guiding Hawaii County. Maybe he is also acting as the"canary in the mine" that we need to listen to more rather then
less.
