COMM.1&5
Opposition to Communication 183 re. Van Pernis
for Hawai'i County Council Planning Committee, 3 PM Tuesday, April 6, 2021
from Cory Harden
It appears that Mayor Roth has thrust this extraordinary request directly into the limelight--though starting
with a written warning would have been a more appropriate first step. Mayor Roth even asked that his
request be fast-tracked directly to County Council, leaving limited time for Councilmembers and the public
to research the facts.
Mayor Roth did this without providing any hard evidence to back up his allegations. Anyone from the
public wanting to research this has to plow through hours of video and pages of transcripts, and wonder
where to find any other documentation.
Mayor Roth didn't even give Commissioner Van Pernis specifics of the allegations when Roth called to
ask for Van Pernis' resignation, according to the Tribune-Herald.
So please defer Mayor Roth's request until he provides evidence that backs up his claims and allows you
and the public to make an informed decision,
That evidence should include:
• links to videos of Commission meetings where Commissioner Van Pernis allegedly"mistreated"
others, with notes to help quickly locate incidents (meetings run for hours)
• transcripts of Commission meetings, with notes as to where in the meetings Commissioner Van
Pernis allegedly"mistreated"others
• documentation regarding other allegations
• descriptions of disability accommodations have been made for Commissioner Van Pernis. I have
been told he has health issues that affect his ability to communicate.
Without evidence, Councilmembers and the public are left to rely on incomplete information and opinions
from people who may have an axe to grind.
