Dear Planning Committee Members:
My wife and I join with the many others who strongly oppose the Mayor's request to terminate the
membership of Mark Van Pernis on the Leeward Planning Commission. His long experience with
community planning organizations, knowledge of the law and participation on that commission has been
invaluable because he consistently questions the often unwarranted and inaccurate assertions of those
advocating for commercial and residential development in West Hawaii. To silence his voice would
effectively silence the large majority of West Hawaii Island residents who wish to retain the historic and
scenic vistas, as well as the rural flavor and easygoing, relaxed lifestyle of our beautiful and unique island.
Though his demeanor may at times violate Robert's Rules of Order, his contributions to careful
consideration of all the pertinent facts governing applications for Leeward Planning Commission approvals
are needed in these stressful times. Our Mayor had best concern himself with assuring that the Planning
Director not participate in matters in which he has a conflict of interest.
Please heed the wishes of most West Hawaii residents, and not the desires of a few unscrupulous
developers.
