This equipment will be utilized by the Hawai`i County Police Department. The Police Department is requesting that this resolution be waived from the Finance Committee and be placed on the May 5, 2021 Council agenda in order to expedite receipt of the equipment. BACKGROUND AND JUSTIFICATION (USE ADDITIONAL SHEETS AS NEEDED): The Max and Yetta Karasik Family Foundation through the Hilo Medical Center Foundation is donating 20 AEDs which include carrying cases and 4 years of maintenance,to be used in the department's patrol and training functions. This is a continuation of the Hilo Medical Center's Be a Lifesaver campaign that was initiated in March 2015,which aims at saving lives when sudden cardiac arrest strikes. Providing AEDs to law enforcement personnel allow the chances of early defibrillation to cardiac patients to increase the chance of survival with better neurological outcomes in out-of- hospital ventricular fibrillation cardiac events. In reviewing this matter, timely approval is crucial. It is therefore advantageous that approval is granted and the matter be placed onto the next Council agenda for review.
