My name is Eileen Kiyoko Morinoue Nanni, born and raised in Holualoa Village, Kona, Hawaii,
year 1946. Herewith, I present both my written testimony and a request for oral testimony for
this parcel of land.
My early years in Holualoa Village began as a child of local coffee farmers, the case being that
my mother and all my siblings also having attended Holualoa Elementary School.
It has been recently brought to my attention the concern for this parcel of land being considered
for purchase by the County of Hawaii, as well as 2 more parcels of land located within very
close proximity to this one, and to which, I will follow up with written and oral testimonies.
I have great concern for this parcel of land, knowing that it has great cultural heritage and value
to the native Hawaiians and other local people, and to our local surfing community, as since my
childhood years (I'm currently 74.5 years of age), Banyan Surf, as it was called, was our local
community's favorite surfing spot. It remains to be so, even moreso, today, with an increase of
surfers, far and near coming to surf here/
This location will remain a favorite surfing spot, but moreso, it has a concrete mark of place in
the local culture as a spot where the traditional Hawaiian sport of surfing grew in Kona, and was
constantly nourished by visiting surfers. It has been a place for an annual Keiki Surf Contest,
which allows the local culture and tradition of island surfing to continue within future generations
to come.
I understand the surfing community has managed to stop a 5 story condominium from being
built on this 15,372 square foot acreage, and that a willing seller has offered this parcel for sale.
This would be the time to act, to keep this open green space for our community to enjoy. You
see, there are very few undeveloped parcels of land along the stretch of the Kona shoreline.
This small but vital parcel of land that is up for a vote next week, has a key role in keeping open
space available for locals, surfers, families and visitors to have access to and from the ocean's
edge. It is of vital interest to keep this green space healthy, free from pollution, both on the
shoreline and in the water, and it should remain a place for the community at large to enjoy
without fear of further pollution that can easily be ignited by unconcerned buyers with a more
personal interest towards commerce, not that, this is not a valued interest, but not just here, on
this parcel.

emanate in the near future for our kupuna, adults, teens and keikis as a result of making a vital
decision to allot part of your rather ample budget for the purchase of Res. 80-21,
