Aloha mai kakou, -
My name is Nicole Lui. I am a descendant of Holualoa Ahupua'a through my mother Agnes Kaelemakule. On.h r motljer
Margaret Pelekane side Kamauliole Pelekane (k) who was born at Palaueka Holualoa. He married Julia Kaleial rand hada son
Kapahu Pelekane, my great grandfather, and other children. These ancestors helped to build the Hale Halawat,±Q HotuaTda
church. This building still stands today not far from Banyans surf spot and is now called Living Stones church. 1 pahl"Pelekane
and his two wives are buried at the cemetary on this property.
On the side of her Father Solomon Kaelemakule. Solomon is the grandson of John Kaelemakule the only Hawaiian merchant
during his time and held several government positions. John Kaelemakule is the grandson of Kinimaka through Keakaonaalii
daughter of Kinimaka. Kinimaka had 8 wives and Keaka is the child of a Poolua relationship.
Kinimaka had a sister named Lo'e. Lo'e is my 4x greatgrand aunt. Lo'e was married to Kaiama a high chief who was given the
Ahupuaa of Holualoa 4 during the Mahele. Upon the death of Kaiama in 1842 the Ahupuaa went to Lo'e. When Lo'e died in
1848 the land went to her children Kamakahalahalawai, Ikaaka (Isacc),Apikala (Abigail).
I myself live in the Ahupua'a of Holualoa today a stones throw away from Banyans or Puapuaa ( its ancient name) beach. I also
continue the cultural practice of tending the burial places of my ancestors at the cemetary. Through my work as an
Archaeologist I had the opportunity to work in the area just above Keakealaniwahine complex and the area is filled with
cultural I believe we should stop building on the makai side of our roads Alii Drive,Queen Kaahumanu Highway,Akoni Pule
Highway etc. Along Alii Drive one cannot see the coast line like when I was growing up from the 60's, 70's and 80's. Its
ridiculous. I don't even go holoholo and pick limu like I used down by the shore because of prying eyes looking from the
condos and big houses. I don't want them to see what I am picking. I am tired of outsiders learning our culture and then
making profit from it. Thanks to the surfers who continue to do the cultural practice of surfing. We know that it was the
Hawaiian people who invented this sport. There is also a burial near the vicinity of this parcel it went before the Burial Council
so if one needs to find out please contact the SHPD office.
Please save Banyans its ancient name Puapuaa should also be recognized. Please purchase this property and make a park or a
green space for people to gather. Please save what little open space there is along Alii Drive.
Holualoa (k) was a chief of Ancient time he married Laaloa (w) and they had many children and their descendants still reside in
Kona. I once knew the Holualoa family they claimed direct descent from Holualoa. I have not seen or heard from them for
many years now. Maybe they have moved.
This is the end of my testimony
