Aloha,
My name is Meredith Buck and I am a resident of Ahupua'a o HOlualoa `Eha, Moku o Kona. I am writing to share my
support for PONC acquisition of Ke Ala Kakou (HOlualoa Community Forest north and mauka from Holualoa
Elementary).
Protection of this 4,888-acre parcel would mitigate risks of stormwater flood damage, recharge aquifers, and preserve
and promote a significant Hawaiian cultural site.
As we have seen across the Pae `Aina, development at high elevations not only destroys forests, but sacrifices the
ecological integrity and survivability of ahupua'a, mauka to makai. When trees are cut, they no longer gather water
from the air to be deposited into the aquifer. When high elevation areas are paved over, rainwater is unable to enter
the soil and instead runs off, contributing to soil erosion and flood damage,.as well as dangers associated with flash
floods. The amount of rainforest loss on the West side of Hawai'i Island, particularly between Kawaihae and Kailua,
has already caused severe drought, irreversible habitat loss, and damage to the aquifer. All of this considered, I
believe it is in the best interests of our entire island community to protect and preserve Holualoa Community Forest
for the benefit of all—from trees and birds to residents and visitors alike.
I would also like to acknowledge and add my support to the points below.

Acquisition would preserve historic and culturally important lands and sites that promote preservation and
perpetuation of native Hawaiian culture, tradition, and customary practices
Acquisition would provide an opportunity to mitigate risk of stormwater flooding and damage to the core of the nearby
village by slowing and infiltrating the flood waters and recharging the aquifer
Acquisition would preserve a rare parcel of remaining open land where residents and visitors can feel connected to the
aina
Significance:
-Access to outdoor recreation
- Preservation of historic and culturally important sites
- Protection of watershed lands to prevent water quality and water supply
