The Ke Ala Kakou (Holualoa Community Forest) is very important to save historic Holualoa,
which has a history of damage caused by flooding. According to long time residents, on one
occasion the Pastor's wife of the original Christian Church (circa 1906) was home alone. As she
was evacuating the church building she remembered that she had left the offering bag so she
ran upstairs to retrieve it. In just a few minutes the entire building collapsed and floated down a
river created by the flood. The next day several men searched the area and found her dead
body. Another flood in 1968 caused damage to the Holualoa area. Furthermore this flood
continued on to Kuakini Highway and Alii Drive leading to road closures on three main routes in
Kona.
The Forest would prevent flooding by absorbing water after very heavy rains while houses built
on this location,would not only be damaged but any hard surface such as concrete driveways to
these homes would cause flood waters to continue to Mamalahoa Highway and cause damages
reminiscent of the past.
The community forest would enable families to stroll for pleasure and linger in our little forest
garden. It will enhance Holualoa as a place to walk around and enjoy for residents, friends, and
visitors. Children can walk through this forest to the Imin Center for after school activities
instead of walking along the road traversed by cars and trucks. c�
