Subject: Resolution 81-21: Magic Sands of La'aloa
Aloha,
My name is Meredith Buck and I reside in Ahupua'a o FIOlualoa `Ehd, Moku o Kona.I am writing to share my strong
support for the PONC acquisition of Magic Sands of La'aloa.
As this is part of my home ahupua'a, I would like to see less development and more preservation of this area.
Development contributes to extreme traffic conditions, pollution of the sea and air, and—especially during this ever-
worsening climate crisis —erosion along the coastline. To continue developing along the shoreline poses serious
danger to the community if a tsunami-triggered evacuation were necessary, and with rising sea levels it is simply not
smart business to develop at the shore. By contrast, preserving the shoreline for community access and ecological
conservation acts as a win-win, allowing a small buffer zone in the event of extreme tides while providing the
community a place to enjoy nature and connect to the history and cultural significance of our home place.
I would also like to name and support the points attached below. La'aloa is aptly named in that this location is indeed
very sacred, with a great many intact historic features and significant presence of royalty.
Please accept my testimony urging the council to approve Resolution 81-21. Mahalo nui loa for your time and
consideration.

Key Points:
• Acquisition would preserve historic and culturally important lands and sites that promote preservation and
perpetuation of native Hawaiian culture, tradition, and customary practices
• Acquisition would protect flood plains that are a threat to the public beaches
• Acquisition would preserve and teach the " living history" of this parcel which currently remains untouched and
intact and therefore depicts how native Hawaiians lived and farmed in their natural surroundings
Cultural significance:
• Hawaiian Canoe Landing
• A high probability of high-status residential structure
• The area of La'aloa, Pahoehoe 1st is sacred to both Kamehameha I and Alapa' inui
• Royal Activities at Kaumalumalu have been held on this site
• DLNR has documented that 23 historic features remain intact
