My name is L,okelaniku'ulei McMichael, Kailua-kona. I'm in support of Res. 81-21: Magic Sands of La'aloa , TMK
(3) 7-7-004:063 Land Area (Acreage): 8.814 : I can't remember the first time I went to Pahoehoe Beach Park, I've
been going there since I was a baby. It's a popular spot to have celebrations. As a jogger it's always a nice place to
stretch. The last gathering I went to was a birthday party, before the pandemic. My friend Gia for her baby Sopia's
birthday, complete with blow up jumping castle.
PONC purchase would expand the current PAHOEHOE BEACII PARK ,already owned by the County of I-Iawai'i.
This parcel is an easy access directly across the street off Ali'i drive. Adding 8.814 acres. Turning it into a bigger
recreation area suitable for praying, keiki to play and have outdoor schooling, walking, dogs, biking,jogging, picnics,
baby luau's, yoga, bridal showers, birthday celebrations, hula dancing, kanikapila music sessions, basket weaving,
bird, whale, dolphin and endangered Hoary Bat watching. Maybe even riding horses like it used to be with Polo and
Paniolos.
Generations of native Hawaiians used this area as well as Royal Ali'i, such as Royal Chiefess PAI-IOF_,IIOE-
WAI-LINE-IKI-A-KALANI and Chief KAUMALUMALU. Activities such as fishing, crafting canoes, games'and
farming went on. They used Pahoehoe and Keoneohuihui (Magic Sands Beach). Plants such as 'Uala (sweet potato),
Irish Potato, Pumpkin, 'Ulu (breadfruit), Watermelon, Kalo (Taro), Coffee, Corn, Onion, Tobacco, Cotton, Coconuts
and Non'. "There is a sweet potato heiau south towards kahalu'u. Hawaiians used moon cycles to determine when to
plant. Flowers too, Plumeria ,Tiare ,Pikake and more. King Kamehameha supposedly loved flowers. When the yellow
flowers bloomed , it was time to catch certain species of fish. Pohaku Ku'ula (Fishing Stone) is located in the
Pahoehoe Ahupua'a.
Pahoehoe is the name of one of the many types of lava, it means smooth. As a way to connect spiritually to the land
people would lie down on it and pray absorbing insight Mana for guidance and enlightenment.
The Kaumalumalu drainageway / Watershed Wai'aha runs right though the middle of this property. The waterway
was used by ancient canoe builders to bring the giant tree logs from the top of I-Iualalai mountain to the bottom at
Pahoehoe. ''hen crafted with as many as 50 canoe builders in an Ahu. I would love to see that Ahu rebuilt. They are
so historic like the pyramids in Egypt because they're beautiful triangular. Heiau's too could be rebuilt they are infact
"Supernatural."
Archaeological Inventory Survey (A.E. Haun & D. Henry, April 2007), identified and documented 47 component
features of ancient habitation, agriculture complex with 13 features, 2 modified outcrops, ceremonial platform, 3
walls and an enclosure.
This park would be similar to Kapiolani Park, on Oahu. Both have history ties to King David Kalakaua. I-Ie rode
horses in lona and his summer house still stands. I wish I knew where King David Kalakaua's horse's are. I know
who's got John Wayne's. Pahoehoe Beach Park is right along the coastline so extending this Park Mauka side would
ensure we still have a park years from now when sea level rising shall take away the sliver we have now.

This 8.814-acre property was last purchased for $1 million a little over 10 years ago. The owner is willing to sell to
PONC. All parties would be happy to see it go to PONC including direct lineal descendant Keawe KKK Alapai.
Please support Pone purchase of Res. 81-21 Magic Sands of La'aloa for acquisition with 2% Land Fund monies.
