No. 130-21 <br /> PLACE: Council Chambers <br /> Hilo, Hawaii <br /> TIME: 1:01 P.M. <br /> Council Chair and Members <br /> Hawaii County Council <br /> Hilo, Hawaii 96720 <br /> Your Committee on Governmental Operations, Relations, and Economic Development, which <br /> was referred Resolution No. 130-21, reports as follows: <br /> Resolution No. 130-21, introduced by Committee Member Susan Lee Loy, urged the County of <br /> Hawaii to recognize the Centennial Celebration of the Hawaiian Homes Commission Act of <br /> 1920. <br /> Ms. Lee Loy introduced the resolution by stating how excited she is for the 100-year anniversary <br /> of this very important act which set aside lands to be returned to native Hawaiians. She then <br /> asked three guests to talk about the upcoming events and the importance of this legislation to the <br /> Hawaiian people. <br /> Special Assistant Niniaukape`ali`i Kawaihae from the Office of the Chairman, Department of <br /> Hawaiian Homelands, talked about the commission's plans for celebrating the centennial from <br /> July 9, 2021, through July 8, 2022. This includes monthly online educational lectures <br /> highlighting key historical moments over the past 100 years and discussing how to support native <br /> Hawaiians moving forward. <br /> Commissioner Mike Kaleikini, Department of Hawaiian Homelands, expressed his gratitude to <br /> Ms. Kawaihae and her team for all the work they have done in preparation for the celebration. <br /> He also expressed thanks to Council Member Lee Loy and the full Council for the resolution and <br /> stated he was available to answer questions about the commission. <br /> Patrick "Uncle Pat" Kahawaiola`a, President of the Keaukaha Community Association, Inc., <br /> stated his organization's support for the resolution and shared that his community has been and <br /> continues to be a major contributor to the wider Hawaii County community. <br /> Several Council Members expressed their support for the resolution and thanked Ms. Lee Loy for <br /> bringing this issue to their attention and writing the resolution. <br /> GOREDC Report No.: 12 <br />
