Your Committee on Governmental Operations, Relations, and Economic Development, which
was referred Resolution No. 130-21, reports as follows:
Resolution No. 130-21, introduced by Committee Member Susan Lee Loy, urged the County of
Hawaii to recognize the Centennial Celebration of the Hawaiian Homes Commission Act of
1920.
Ms. Lee Loy introduced the resolution by stating how excited she is for the 100-year anniversary
of this very important act which set aside lands to be returned to native Hawaiians. She then
asked three guests to talk about the upcoming events and the importance of this legislation to the
Hawaiian people.
Special Assistant Niniaukape`ali`i Kawaihae from the Office of the Chairman, Department of
Hawaiian Homelands, talked about the commission's plans for celebrating the centennial from
July 9, 2021, through July 8, 2022. This includes monthly online educational lectures
highlighting key historical moments over the past 100 years and discussing how to support native
Hawaiians moving forward.
Commissioner Mike Kaleikini, Department of Hawaiian Homelands, expressed his gratitude to
Ms. Kawaihae and her team for all the work they have done in preparation for the celebration.
He also expressed thanks to Council Member Lee Loy and the full Council for the resolution and
stated he was available to answer questions about the commission.
Patrick "Uncle Pat" Kahawaiola`a, President of the Keaukaha Community Association, Inc.,
stated his organization's support for the resolution and shared that his community has been and
continues to be a major contributor to the wider Hawaii County community.
Several Council Members expressed their support for the resolution and thanked Ms. Lee Loy for
bringing this issue to their attention and writing the resolution.

The vote was taken on the motion to move this measure to Council with a favorable
recommendation and passed with eight"ayes."
Your Committee on Governmental Operations, Relations, and Economic Development is in
accord with the purpose and intent of Resolution No. 130-21, and recommends its adoption.
