To Whom It May Concern
We are real estate agents in the State of Hawaii and split our time between Keaau and Kailua-
Kona. We have participated as public testifiers in 2 hearings with the Leeward Planning
Commission that Mr. Van Pernis was also a part of. Mr. Van Pernis was aggressive with public
testifiers, asking leading questions much outside the scope of a public testifiers expertise. I
witnessed him dismissing law abiding tax, paying special us permit applicants by stating that
the commission "does not represent them." He came across as very biased and unprofessional
to seemingly everyone involved in the hearing process, including other commissioners. I think
Hawaii County deserves better representation than Mr. Van Pernis on the Leeward Planning
Commission. I have seen his unprofessional behavior hurt the people he is supposed to serve,
which in turn hurts our community.
We strongly support the removal of Mr. Van Pernis from the Leeward Planning Commission
based on the behavior we witnessed at public hearings.
