I try and refrain from comments on the issue of Mark Van Pernis and the planning commission because I
am his wife, but I have a couple of observations after reading quotes from Nancy Carr Smith in a WHT
article dated May 3rd. What is it with Nancy Carr Smith? She seems to complain about everything. First
she was upset about Mark Van Pernis's verbal questions, and now she's upset because they are written.
After reading on FB that according to Tim Richard's wife, she hates Mark, I understand she's on a crusade.
It was so unprofessional to see this is writing or to have to mention that even happened, but it explains a lot
of her behavior. And just as Mitch Roth won't mention people who have complained about Mark, I won't
mention people that I know that have been on non governmental committees with Nancy Carr Smith and
can't stand her. Apparently they felt she tried to dominate people instead of address issues. Enough of this.

If I recall correctly there are over 35 letters of written support to the council for Mark and numerous letters
to the editor or support. He has taken training for corporation counsel and studied material not previously
available to him. I, and many others believe he has knowledge that helps with planning issues in Kona.
And for those who felt the April 1st meeting went on too long, do you recall there were 30 people or more
testifying on one application alone? I believe the work of the planning commission is important and I
appreciate those who are conscious of the issues. I have one suggestion that might shorten your meetings,
do site visits. With all due respect, I would like to know how many people on the planning commission or
even the planning director actually does a site visit? Some of the applications require special attention, for
example, you recently approved a preschool (not even a school) in the most heavily trafficked area in
Kona. Of course people hear the word "school" and think this is wonderful (as I do) and it is next to a
charter school but you required no turn lanes from Hualalai Rd on a blind spot. With a hundred new cars in
the most traffic ridden area of Kona at the worst times of day, this will be a problem. Site visits individually
or as a group will answer many of your questions and therefore shorten your meeting time.
