Aloha. This letter is to provide support for the Japanese Cultural Center of Kona's
request before the Ad Hoc Committee for Nonprofit Organization Grants.
I am currently a resident of Oahu but was born on the Hamakua Coast and raised in
Hilo until my family moved to Honolulu so I have deep roots on the Big Island. I still
a
have many friends and relatives there and I visit the Big Island frequently. 3

I volunteer for the Nisei Veterans Legacy, a non-profit educational organization
dedicated to keep the story of the Nisei Soldiers of World War 11 alive for our younger
generations.
Over the past years, I have taken historical exhibits to Hilo and Kona and through this
effort became familiar with the Japanese Civic Association of Kona and its many fine
members who supported our exhibitions. Through this association I've learned about
the community's efforts to develop this Cultural Center.
I believe that the Cultural Center once developed, will serve the entire community of
Kona, the Island of Hawaii, the State of Hawaii and will attract people from many other
countries. It will help display the unique culture of Kona as an example of Hawaii's
melting pot of people and cultures.
I therefore urge your support for this grass roots project to help to see it through fruition.
Aloha and Mahalo,
Byrnes Yamashita
